Peeking in the Cellar

Throughout the long, cold, and dark winter months the door to our cellar has been tightly closed, our newest vintages being kept under a secretive lock and key. But now that summer is fast on its way, we’ve decided to tease you just a little by opening the back door to our cellar just a crack and, metaphorically of course, letting you have a peek!

Our famous Nice Racks are back! The white, just as sweet and fruitful as it’s always been. The red, just as rich and satisfying as you remember it. These summer favourites, along with our Tragic Tales – The Rosé and the White Merlot, will be among the first of our new 2018 vintages to be released this spring!

Of course, all of your favourites are on their way back as well, showcasing their iconic orchard influences. Our Viognier is bursting with the flavour of fresh peaches and our Pinot Gris tastes like a crisp Okanagan apple right off the tree. Our Unoaked Chardonnay once again has that succulent note of apricots while our Muscat has that pleasant but unusual hint of Mango that still confounds us just a little.

Also of special note, our two endangered grapes, the Oranienstiener and the Ehrenfelser are still safely under our care. The Ehrenfelser still hugging the heights of a cliff overlooking the lake and the Oranienstiener still comfortably tucked away in the mountainous nook where its home vineyard sits. We’re proud to say we’ve done our part once again to ensure these two treasures have survived another year.

And of course, our reds are just as rich and full bodied as you recall. The Cabernet Franc has aged beautifully, opening up a wonderful flavour of dark cherries and softening on the palate. While our new vintage of Meritage is showing the same wonderful complexity as last year, but with bolder and more distinguished notes.

There are several new wines coming this spring as well! Although those ones we’re keeping on the hush until their release. Let’s just say that joining our portfolio this year will be a unique varietal of African heritage along with an old classic of ours that we’ve been without for far too long. But unfortunately this is all I’m at liberty to say, so at some point you’ll have to stop peeking and come on down to the Back Door Winery to see what the last harvest has brought us!
